This invention relates to an attachment for electric drills and has for its primary object to provide, in`a manner as hereinafter set forth, an attachment of such class by means utilized oroperating a saw blade, ile, or other reciprocating tool.
A further object of the'invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose afore said which includes a travelling carriage for adjustably supporting the drill, and which further includes a cam element Jfor connection with the drill chuck to reciprocate a saw blade or the like, the adjustable support for the drill permitting the saw blade to be presented to the work with the drill disposed at various angles of inclination with respect to the travelling carriage.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as .hereinafter more particularly described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an eml bodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the description and draw -ings are to be taken as illustrative and that the-invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claims .hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral indicates generally an electric hand drill provided with the usual chuck 2 for connection with a drill bit, not shown. The attachment consists of a travelling carriage 3 which is in the form of an elongated plate .having marginal portions thereof bent in a manner to provide channels 4 in the lower face of the carriage adjacent the side edges thereof. Disposed within the channels 4 are a plurality of rollers 5 which are l adapted to have rolling contact with the work, and which are rotatably supported within the channels by means of suitable shafts 6 extending through the Side walls of the channels. At the foreward end thereof the carriage is provided with a recess 7 which is disposed between the channels 4 and which tapers in a rearward direction. Extending around the wall of the recess 7 is an upstanding Bange 8.
Rearwardly of the recess 7, the carriage is formed with a transversely extending, vertically disposed plate 9 which is formed with an upwardly arched central portion 10. Pivotally connected to the rear face of the plate 9 by means of an adjustable bolt 11 is a supporting member 12 which is formed on its forward face with a shoulder13 for engagement with the upper face of the central portion lO of the plate 9. The supporting member 12 .terminates at its upper end in an enlarged head 14 which is apertured transversely of the carriage for the reception therethrough of a pin 15 for pivotally connecting with the supporting member 12 a combined support and gulde element indicated generally at 16.

At the forward side of the housing 27, the arcuate portions 29 terminate in lugs 30 arranged in parallel relation and adapted to receive therethrough a bolt 31 which is provided with a wing nut 32. At the rearward side of the housing 2-7, the arcuate portions 29 merge into arcuate extensions 33 which are maintained in spaced relation by a suitable holdfast device 34 located adjacent the arcuate portions 29. Projecting between lower end portions of the extensions 33 is the upper end of an arcuate bracket 35, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to a lug 36 projecting upwardly from the carriage 3. The bracket 35 is pivotally connected to the lug 36 by means of a suitable bolt 37 which extends longitudinally of the carriage. The bracket 35 1s formed with an elongated slot 38 through which a bolt 39 extends. The bolt 39 further extends through openings provided adjacent the lower ends of the extensions 33 and is provided with a wing nut 40.
The plate 19 of the support and guide element 16 is formed in its forward face with a dove-tailed groove 41 within which is disposed a slide 42. The slide 42 is provided on its forward face with a pair of spaced ribs 43 which are formed with apertures for the extension therethrough of bolts 44. The
ribs 43 are adapted to receive therebetween the base portion of a reciprocating tool, such as a saw blade 45, the tool being ixedly connected with the slide by means of the bolts 44. Projecting from the rear face of v the slide 42, adjacent the ripper end of the latter, is a stud 46 which is provided with a Aroller 47 /extending within and engaging the side walls of a diagonally disposed groove 48 formed in the peripheral face of the cam roller 25. The stud 46 extends loosely through a slot 49 formed in the plate N In the operation of the attachment, the
cam roller 25 is rotated by the chuck 2, and owing to the' engagement of theJ roller 47 with the Vside walls of the roove 48, the saw blade is reciprocate during each revolution of the cam roller. As the blade 45 cuts through the work, as indicated at 50, the carriage 3 is moved in the direction of the cut. By loosening the wing nut 40, the drill, together with the support and guide 16 may be swung about the pivot 15 as indicated in Figurel by dotted lines. In the dotted line showing in Figure l, the tool 45 is shown reversed with respect to the slide 42 whereby the teeth of thetool are disposed on the forward face thereof. By loosening the bolts 11 and 37, the entire attachment .with the exception of the carriage 3 may be swung sidewise as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 2. In order'that thc drill may be accurately positioned at a lateral inclination, the rear face ol the central p0rtion 10 of the plate 9 is calibrated as indicated at 51. The supporting member 12 is provided with a peep hole 52 through which the calibrations 51 are visible. In order that the attachment may be more conveniently handled, an auxiliary handle member 53 is provided, such handle member being secured in position by the bolt 37. In order to hold the carriage 3 level when the drill is tilted sidewise, a removable counter weight 54 may be seated on the carriage as indicated in Figures 3 and 7.
It is thought that the many advantages of an attachment in accordance with this invention will be readily apparent, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resort-cd to, so long as such changes fall within the scope ofthe invention as defined What we claim is:
1. In an attachment for connection with the rotatable chuck of an electric hand drill, a cam roller having a shank for engagement by the chuck, said cam roller having its peripheral face formed with a diagonally disposed groove, a guide element adjacent the cam roller, slidably mounted in the guide element, a roller carried by the tool connecting element and extending into said groove, a travelling carriage for engagement with an object to be operated upon, a vertically disposed plate extending transversely of the carriage; a

In an attachment for an electric drill, a travelling carriage for adjustably suporting the drill, sa1d carriage being in the orm of an elon ated plate having marginal ortions tliereo bent to provide the lower ace of the plate with a pair of spaced channels, a plurality 'of rollers rotatably mounted within the channels and depending below the walls thereof, an apertured lug projecting upwardly `from the plate, and a vertically disposed plate extendin transversely of the carriage in spaced re ation to said lug.

In an attachment for an electric drill, a travelling carriage for adjustably suporting the drill, said carriage being in the orm of an elongated plate having marginal portions thereof bent to provide the lower face of the plate with a pair of spaced channels, a pluralit of rollers rotatably mounted within the c annels and depending below the Walls thereof, an apertured lug projecting upwardly from Kthe plate, and a vertlcally disposed plate extending transversely of the carriage in spaced relation to said lug, said vertically disposed plate having an upwardly arched central portion .provided with a calibrated face.

In an attachment for an electric drill, a combined guide and sup )o1-ting element, said elelnent including a c amp for encircling the drill, an elongated plate formed integrally with the clamp, a supporting member projecting from the plate at a right angle, thereto, and a pair of aperlured, spaced webs depending from the supporting member.
